Wondering

I'm listening to the rain patter against my bedroom window. The clouds have lingered for two days, after teasing us by allowing glimpses of sunshine. Exercise, music, food, talking with others have proven temporary remedies for the doldrums that weigh on me on cloudy days.

This morning, I put on my raincoat, and walked around my property, looking at the few vegetables that have withstood the persistent wetness. The tomatoes, rosemary, and lemon balm are standing valiantly, reaching for what little light there is. The arugula, chives, and peas are poking their heads above the soil. This year's experiment, a cantaloupe plant, died. There is absolutely no trace of it.

At this point, I'm just waiting to see what will happen in the next week or so. Will my small plot yield any edibles or will this be one of those years when very little thrives? Waiting. Waiting.
